The Elkhart Housing Authority (EHA) offers a Homeownership program and a Family Self Sufficiency (FSS) program which provide financial fitness education, case management, and financial benefits. EHA's staff will provide financial assessments to determine which barriers a person faces on their journey to financial independence.

1. Credit Repair
Credit repair is a significant goal for most people who are trying to buy a home. As a FSS participant with a goal of homeownership or credit repair, EHA staff will pull your credit report from all three credit bureaus.  In addition, we will assist participants in contacting creditors regarding payment and settlement options.

2. Money Management
Budgeting, reducing debts and saving money are major tasks for anyone who is working towards financial independence. Homeownership and FSS staff provide money management counseling to assist participants in developing an action plan to address these areas.

3. Savings
Establishing a savings account is one of the most important steps in financial fitness.  In addition to traditional savings accounts, Individual Development Accounts (IDA) are available to participating families.  There are qualifying factors for opening these accounts.  LaCasa of Goshen and the local YWCA offer IDAs for homeownership, post-secondary education, and starting a business. IDAs offer up to a 4:1 match on up to $1000.

In addition to these services, EHA offers a Financial Fitness class.  This course teaches participants how to save money, budget money and how to repair their credit.  It is open to the public.  If you are interested in participating in our Financial Fitness class, please contact one of the FSS Coordinators.
